As part of our celebration of having survived for thirty years we have created a digital record of Salvation’s press and media which, as you will see below, has been extensive. We will be adding to this gradually over the coming weeks and months as there is a lot and material and to make it easier to navigate we have divided it into several sections which are:
Nigel is the founder of the Redemption label and Managing Director of Salvation Films whose imagery, design style and battles against censorship have defined the company since its inception.
The only film in UK history to be banned on the grounds of blasphemy, the banning of which led to a censorship battle with the BBFC, the UK government and the European Court of Human Rights and, ultimately, the abolition of the law of blasphemy itself and the founding of Redemption!
The infamous online and real life all-girl collective that was formed in 2002 and was, by 2008, the source of a national scandal that almost brought down the BBC and led to their being mentioned in the House of Commons!
In 2008 a group of the Satanic Sluts, headed by Voluptua aka Georgina Baillie, asked if they could form a performance group called the Satanic Sluts Extreme and if so would Salvation help them with promotions, bookings and so on? We agreed and they started getting a few gigs and began to establish the Satanic Sluts Extreme as a brand. Around the same time some of the girls, including Georgina, starting seeing Russell Brand who then began mentioning the Satanic Sluts by name on his radio show. So far so good.
Things changed when Brand found out that Satanic Slut Voluptua was also the granddaughter of Andrew Sachs, the actor who played Manuel in Fawlty Towers and started making silly comments about this on his show. Around the same time the troupe were booked for a performance in Vienna on the weekend of the 25/26th October. Just before they left Georgina mentioned that the Mail on Sunday had been calling her about Brand’s comments. I said that she ought to call them back but she wanted to wait until she got back from Vienna…
…on Sunday 26th October the Mail’s front cover headline was “BBC OBSCENE PHONE CALLS TO ACTOR, 78” and one of the biggest scandals ever to engulf the BBC began. Here is a selection of the press generated by what became known as SACHSGATE.
The official magazine of the UK division of the Church of Satan came to Salvation as a by-product of Black Mass and was redesigned and revamped by Wingrove who incorporated the Satanic Sluts into it. However, also in that our relaunch issue was a feature on a sailor in the Royal Navy who had been given permission by the captain of the Ark Royal to practice Satanism onboard as that was his chosen religion. The story went global.
